Space Saving Furniture
As part of your Container Housing Project you are to design and produce a model of a piece of environmentally friendly space saving furniture.
The piece of space saving furniture is to be included in your container house and no two people in your house should be designing the same piece of furniture.
What is space saving furniture?
Space saving furniture is furniture designed to make the best use of the existing space. It is especially important as apartment furniture and condo furniture where space may be limited. To make the best use of the available space, the furniture may be designed somewhat smaller than traditionally-sized furniture, or may be used for more than one purpose.
Furniture designed for space saving can be used in a number of different applications. Some pieces even come on wheels so that they can be rolled up and stored out of the way when not in use. It is even possible to get sinks, complete with counter tops, that are like this. However, most space saving furniture is more traditional in its design.
Space saving furniture is furniture that saves space by being:
- folds away
- can change size
example of space saving furniture include futons, sofa beds, fold away beds, folding chairs, modular lounges, beds/ couches with under-storage.
Step One Research
As a group research and evaluate using PMI or PCQ 15 different examples of existing space saving furniture designs. Your Research should be in a 2 page A4 word document. Your document should have your class name, your group name and all your group members listed on it.
Step Two Concept Development
Each students is to produce 10 sketches for 10 different ideas for space saving furniture on 5 sheets of A4 paper(2 ideas per page). Your sketches should include notes on what materials are to be used to make the furniture and how the furniture would work. You should also include a PMI (plus, Minus, Interesting) or PCQ (pro’s, con’s and Questions) of each of your designs.

Use techniques such as laser cutting, three dimensional printing, plastic bending strip heaters and various traditional model making tools .
Materials such as fabric, plastic, ply wood, balsa wood, ply wood and various wire are available for you to produce your models.
